Irish Dance
St. Andrew's Elementary is a multicultural school which celebrates the uniqueness and treasures the diversity of the children we teach. We are a staff with many talents and we are lucky enough to be able to share our gifts with our students. In this capacity I enjoy sharing my love of Irish dance with approximately 100 of our students each week.
I work with three different Irish dance groups as well as teach my grade six class Irish dance during our teacher led physical education periods. Irish dance classes begin in the middle of September and practices continue until the beginning of May when we compete in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival.
Three mornings a week I work with different age groups from 8:00-8:45 a.m. to prepare them for the festival. On Tuesdays mornings I work with Junior Irish dancers (grades four and five). On Wednesday mornings I teach the Primary Irish dancers (grade two and three). On Friday mornings I work with the Senior Irish dancers (grade six and seven). These students work very hard during their forty minute lesson each week and are always excited to perform for the school community during our Red and White Christmas assembly and our Green Day assembly just before St. Patrick's Day.
It is with great joy that I spend this time each year sharing my love of Irish dance. The students have progressed a great deal over the years and each year they have won an award in the ethic category of the Performing Arts Festival. Our most recent award that we received on the May 5th, 2010, was "The Most Promising Performers Under Age 14" award. The children danced amazingly well and I was extremely proud of all of them. If your child is new to our school community I hope he or she will consider joining us next year.
